SPECIALIZED GROUPS:

Some of the specialized groups currently offered include:

HEALTHY PARENTING:  Healthy Parenting is a 6 session open-ended group that meets once per week and follows a psycho-educational format.  The group focuses on 3 areas:  building trust, controlling anger, and setting limits and boundaries.  This group may be helpful for parents or guardians, who may or may not have their children living with them.  Healthy Parenting utilizes videos, handouts and booklets.

 

CO-DEPENDENCY GROUP: Co-Dependency is an open-ended therapy group for individuals challenged by tendencies to behave in overly passive or excessively caretaking ways that negatively impact one's relationships and quality of life. This group helps to identify traits and self-defeating patterns that will encourage change.

 

CREATIVE ARTS THERAPY: Creative Arts Therapy is an 8 session open-ended group.  You don’t have to be an artist to participate!  Group members will explore the theme of recovery through the creative process.  There will be opportunities to pursue different outlets of self-expression, including drawing, writing, and collaging.  Group members will be encouraged to creatively express their definition of recovery as they feel comfortable.

 

ANGER MANAGEMENT GROUP:  Anger Management Group is an open-ended psycho-education therapy group that is 12 sessions.  It will cover many important topics: understanding cues, cognitive re-structuring, the aggression cycle, and the conflict resolution mode. The group is utilizes a SAMSHA curriculum and members will learn techniques to manage anger in healthy ways.  The curriculum is used in substance use and mental health settings.

 

TREM: WOMEN’S TRAUMA RECOVERY EMPOWERMENT:  TREM is a 24-session group for women who have histories of abuse and trauma.  The main focus of the group is educating and empowering women as well as learning healthy ways of coping. Research has proven that the women who have completed TREM have had lower rates of re-hospitalization, incarceration, and emergency room visits.  TREM sessions have a special topic each week for the group to discuss and an exercise.  New members may join the group with the permission of the group facilitator.

 

M-TREM: MEN’S TRAUMA RECOVERY EMPOWERMENT: M-TREM is a 24-session group for men who have histories of trauma and want to learn new ways of coping.  This group recognizes that men usually need to focus on and develop different basic skills than women in order to work effectively on emotions and relationships.  The group uses a psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach; alternative responses are explored and exercises are used to try new coping behaviors. New members may join the group at almost with the permission of the group facilitator.

 

CRIMINAL THINKING ERRORS GROUP:  This group is for individuals who have may have current legal involvement or have histories of incarcerations and are re-integrating into the community.  This group will help individuals overcome barriers by identifying patterns of criminal thinking and correcting these errors.  It will also address developing positive social skills, post-institutionalization syndrome, and successful re-entry. 

 

CONTINGENCY MANAGEMENT:  Contingency Management is an evidence-based practice where ACBC participants receive tickets for positive behavior and may be able to win fun prizes.  Tickets are given out at random intervals for positive behaviors, for example, negative drug screens, attending appointments on time, or other special tasks that your counselor may have given to you.

 

LEISURE EDUCATION: Leisure Education is a 12 session, open-ended group that employs SAMSHA’s guiding principles for treating patients with co-occurring disorders with very specific content that deals with issues of substance abuse and mental disorders and offers new and innovative activities to meet the needs of recovering participants.  Most activities are aimed at larger issues of leisure awareness, social skills, decision making, and leisure resources, providing the necessary tools to plan, invest, and engage in wholesome and rewarding leisure activities.
